The Big Cooking and Gardening Day Out with The Woodee (28 May 2018)
We had team Woodee return to Madley Plants on Bank Holiday Monday and what a day we had! We kicked off at 11 with a talk about how to make the most of your bedding plants in pots and containers to ensure they give you pleasure for the whole of the summer. We looked at feeding, watering, deadheading and trimming back unruly plants.
The Woodee Team then started their ‘Big Cookout’, firing up three Woodee Fire Pits showing how to cook spatchcock chicken over a wood fire and steam trout in wet newspaper over charcoal. While mouths were watering, they cooked a traditional full English Breakfast with American pancakes.
Later on we had a chance for the children to get their hands dirty and they had a go at sowing vegetable seeds and were shown how to plant peas in the ground up a support. There was also a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the Madley Plants allotment and a walk through the main growing tunnel demonstrating just how Simon and Michele pot up 20 odd thousand plants each Spring.
The focus was then back on team Woodee who showed some great ideas for feeding children outdoors. They cooked up a local sausage hash, followed by scotch pancakes, baked apples, chocolate bananas and brazed fruits. And of course it wouldn’t be a proper cookout without marshmallows and s’mores!
The weather stayed fine and we have to thank Madley Primary School for allowing us to use their car park so it wasn't too congested here at the nursery. If you managed to find time to come along, thanks for joining us, it was great to see so many of you here.
Keep an eye on our events page for future events here at Madley Plants and hopefully we'll see the Woodee back here again very soon.
